Biography
Introduced to golf at the age of 11 by his estate agent father, Theo a 10 handicapper.Struck by lightning as an amateur in South Africa.Sustained a broken left arm in a skiing accident in Switzerland prior to the 1999 season, but linked up with the late Jos Vanstiphout, the Belgian sports psychologist and won the Novotel Perrier Open de France after a play-off with Greg Turner.Missed opportunity to equal Greg Norman's record of 11 successive individual wins in the Alfred Dunhill Cup when beaten by China's Wu Xiang-Bing in 1999. Played the front 9 at Wentworth Club in 29 when beating Sergio Garcia in the first round of the Cisco World Match Play in 1999.Won the Trophee Lancome tournament in France in 2000 and 2002.Follows in the footsteps of Gary Player and Ernie Els as a South African winner of the US Open.Won the Volvo Order of Merit title in Europe in 2001.H is the first South African to do this since 1975.Awarded Honourary life membership in 2001 on the European Tour, and in 2004 on the Southern Africa PGA Tour.Won the Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the month for Jun 2004 after his expert display which took him to the second US Open Championship title. Goosen was named as The European Tour Golfer of the month for November/December 2004 in celebration of his outstanding international performances in South Africa and the United States.Retief awarded Compleat Golfer Player of the Year Award for 2005.
